Keep Within Speed Limits

There are many reasons why people speed on roads these days. Hectic lifestyle means more appointments to meet. Being stuck at a traffic jam may lead you to speed up after you find your way out. You may speed because other vehicles are speeding around you. Sometimes, we may not even be aware of the fact that we are speeding. The fact is you are less in control of your vehicle when you speed. This makes it equally hazardous for you and for others on the road. Though the problem lies with everyone, putting a stop has to start somewhere. Perhaps the easiest place to start is you.

Facts
In Hong Kong, speed limits are imposed primarily to promote road safety. At present, our speed limit structure comprises the following 3 main categories:
Low band 50 km/h for urban or new town built-up areas
Middle band 70/80 km/h for areas outside urban or new town built-up areas
High band 100 km/h for high standard expressways, North Lantau Highway being the one
exception (110/km/h)
Most accidents at road junctions occur when motorists pick up speed to cross the junction just before the traffic light changes to red.
Safety Tips
Appropriate speed
You may think that as long as you drive within the speed limit, you are driving at an appropriate speed. However, keeping under the speed limit can still be too fast for the roads.
This is because road and traffic conditions may vary. This makes it necessary to consider things beyond the speed limit. This includes sudden bends, narrow roads, need to overtake, poor weather conditions and poor lighting at night.
Choosing the appropriate speed is largely about judgment. In any case, do not exceed the speed limit.
Survey Bites
Findings from 2011 AXA Road Safety Survey:
-
Among the dangerous driving behaviours declared by respondents, speeding at more than 10km/h above limit is the most commonly committed offence (80% of respondents).
