AXA Road Safety Survey
Speeding tops the list of dangerous driving behavior committed by Hong Kong motorists.
AXA discovered this from its first survey recently conducted on some 500 drivers. This survey helps AXA understand the attitudes and behaviours of drivers in Hong Kong.
While they may be opened to profess in committing driving offences, majority of Hong Kong drivers are mindful of road dangers.
Here are some of the main findings:
Which unsafe driving behaviours do they view as most dangerous?

88% - Driving after consuming drugs

83% - Driving after having more than the recommended alcohol intake for safe driving

82% - Driving after taking medication / prescription medication
-
79% - Using samrtphones / tablets while driving (e.g. surfing internet, reading news etc.)
Some of the most frequently committed dangerous driving behaviours are:

80% - Speeding at more than 10 kilometres an hour above limit

68% - Going through an amber light
-
63% - Overtaking, turning, or switching lane without signalling
-
59% - Answering the phone without a hand free kit or text message while driving
-
59% - Driving fast just a few metres behind the car in front of you (Tailgating)
What would deter them from driving dangerously?

91% - Imposition of penalties

37% - Suspension or revocation of licence

36% - Imprisonment
Top 5 dangerous behaviours exhibited by cyclists from the view of the motorists

36% - Riding against the flow of traffic

30% - Failing to keep to the edge of the road

30% - Disobeying traffic-light signals

27% - Weaving in and out of traffic

24% - Failing to keep a proper lookout for traffic
Top 5 dangerous behaviours exhibited by pedestrians from the view of the motorists

56% - Crossing / dashing across the road without looking out for oncoming vehicles

50% - Not obeying pedestrian crossing signals
-
34% - Crossing the road when the 'green man' is flashing

34% - Failing to use pedestrian crossings

33% - Crossing the road between stationary vehicles
Top 5 dangerous behaviours exhibited by passengers from the view of motorists

62% - Distracting driver by talking to them
-
46% - Getting on / off while the vehicle is still moving
-
42% - Distracting driver by making loud noises (e.g. singing, screaming, etc.)
-
33% - Instigating driver to speed up and overtake the vehicle in front
-
31% - Putting the head, hands or any part of the body out of the window
